“NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE!”
This familiar slogan seems to be the hue and cry of our day, seen on posters and graffiti and shouted by marching crowds. And, there is no denying the genuine grievances and injustice in human relationships from a variety of causes.
But the real injustice began millennia ago, in a beautiful garden where humans walked “in the cool of the day” with their Creator. All was at peace, all was in order and there was perfect unity and justice. Then, sadly, man chose to walk independent of God and thus, in disobedience to Him and His order.
From that moment, injustice and the subsequent absence of peace began to dominate our planet: Adam blamed Eve for his disobedience, Cain killed Abel, and injustice spread to all mankind. The rest of history reveals inadequate human attempts to somehow regain that peace.
Of course, we know that the only solution to our lost condition, mass confusion and profound turmoil and emptiness can be found in just one place. Or rather, in One Person – the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
WHAT THEN SHALL WE DO?
Psalms lays out a clear guide to what we should be about: “Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for Your possession” (Ps 2:8). The Father tells the Son to ask. How will the Son ask?
The risen Jesus will ask through us! As believers, we are in Christ, seated (positioned) with Him right now in the spiritual realm (Eph 2:6,7). And as part of our “inheritance in the saints” (Eph 1:17-19), we can, should, must ask for the nations to be brought back into right relationship with God our Creator.
GETTING WHAT WE DO NOT DESERVE
We do not deserve the mercy of God, or the staying of His hand of judgment, given what we have allowed and pursued as a nation: abortion on demand until the moment of birth; the exploding sex trade; witchcraft and sorcery; unbridled covetousness, sin and idolatry; splintered families; hateful rejection of God, His Word and salvation. You and I both know the list could go on and on.
And even as Christ’s Church, His Body on earth, do we deserve revival from our comfortable forms, lukewarm efforts and self-centered message?
Though we all deserve judgment, our God is truly a God of love, mercy and justice. Jesus – Who bore the justice and mercy of God on the Cross for us, and took on the judgment we deserve – gave Himself freely 2,000 years ago already knowing this moment in time was coming in our history-yet-to-be!
Like today, there was a time in the 1960’s of great upheaval, anarchy and rebellion against God in western nations. Yet, God by His Spirit was poured out. The result was a great charismatic renewal and “Jesus movement” revival that ushered in a global awakening of Christ’s Body and multitudes being saved and filled with His Spirit!
